  9.          The Mariner 9 spacecraft will reach Mars and be placed  
  10. into orbit in November.  The following schedule of events is for 
  11. your planning purposes.  All times are Pacific Standard Time.

  13.          Oct. 26                2nd midcourse correction (to 
  14.                                 provide precision required 
  15.                                 for orbital insertion). 
  16.          Oct. 28                Press Briefing, NASA Hdq. 
  17.                                 Washington, D. C. 
  18.          Nov. 8                 Press Room open at JPL 
  19.          Nov. 10                Press Briefing at JPL Press 
  20.                                 Room. 
  21.                                 Take 1st series of approach 
  22.                                 pictures of Mars.  30 pictures. 
  23.          Nov. 11                PLAYBACK 1st series, 30 
  24.                                 pictures.  3 to 6 p.m. 
  25.          Nov. 12                PLAYBACK 2nd series, 7 to 10 
  26.                                 p.m., 30 pictures. 
  27.          Nov. 13                Orbit insertion.  4:05 p.m., 
  28.                                 PST.,  15 minute burn of 
  29.                                 retro engine. 
  30.                                 PLAYBACK 3rd series, 30 
  31.                                 pictures, 3 to 4 hours later. 
  32.          Nov. 14                PLAYBACKS from first two orbits: 
  33.                                 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.

  39.          Once in orbit at Mars (2 orbits per day) the daily  
  40. picture return will be about 60 frames.  The spacecraft will  
  41. transmit pictures and other science data twice a day between  
  42. approximately 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.  Hard copies of selected  
  43. pictures, will be available each day beginning Nov. 11th. 
  44.          The basic mission is 90 days in orbit.  An extended  
  45. mission could last up to one year. 
  46.          A press kit covering the first 18 days in orbit will  
  47. be mailed in late October.  The kit will provide a time-line  
  48. for the complex science operations planned for each orbit. 
  49.          If you plan to cover, this office would appreciate a  
  50. call. No special credentials required other than Press I.D.
